Crime Stoppers - How it Started
News Type: Other

Crime Stoppers of Volusia and Flagler Counties was incorporated as a local 501©(3) tax exempt organization on June 11, 1996. It was formed by the members of the Daytona Beach Rotary Club, following the murder of one of its members in his own home, during a robbery.

Shocked and dismayed by this incident, citizens united to form Crime Stoppers as a local organization dedicated to taking criminals off the street and making our community a safer place for all of its law abiding citizens.

On a dark spring night in 1996, the eerie sounds of low circling helicopters signaled something terribly wrong in the neighborhood. A search was underway and the newscast shortly confirmed our suspicion but the shock of the event was so much more than one could fathom.

A successful program in Miami, linked to a nationwide operation, led to the development of an area chapter of Crime Stoppers. With the support of the local Police and Sheriff's Department's and cooperative community spirit the organization has become what is today known as Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida.

In a dramatic way, "A Legacy of Caring" exemplifies the spirit that Alan Robertson always demonstrated. Literally hundreds of crimes have been solved in the 12 years of our organization's dedication to
