Richardson family sets up External Reward, scholarship fund

By Ron Bartlett
The family of Stephen Richardson has set up a fund with the two-fold purpose of helping to find his killer or killers, while also remembering his name through the endowment of a college scholarship.

Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida is offering a reward of $1,000 for any information leading to an arrest in this case. Half of the fund’s contributions will be added to the Crime Stopper reward, creating, the family hopes, extra incentive for persons with knowledge of the crime to come forward.

The other half of the fund will be used to reward an individual with college tuition — a student “Stephen would have approved of” — his family said.

Richardson’s family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, they receive contributions to this fund as a way of remembering him.

“Our family would appreciate any donation to this fund and help in this wonderful cause,” Richardson’s family said in an e-mail.

Richardson, 25, was found last Friday morning after police performed a “welfare check,” on him after his mother reported not hearing from him that morning. She last spoke to him at around 9 the night before.

There was no sign of forced entry or of an altercation in the apartment that Richardson lived in alone on the ground floor of Barrington Apartments, 600 Moody Road.

Neighbors and his co-workers at PRC Call Center found his death a shock as they described him as a good friend, helpful and outgoing.

Anyone with information about this case should call Detective Danette Evey at 329-0115 or the Crime Stoppers (888) 277-TIPS (8477), where callers may remain anonymous.
