A man armed with a handgun and an accomplice robbed a DeLand convenience store Sunday night, fleeing with cash and scratch-off lottery tickets. The lone clerk was struck on the head by the gunman, and was later treated for his injury on scene. No shots were fired.

The 49-year-old clerk told responding deputies that a Jeep with two men inside had pulled up to the gas pumps of the Valero store at 2500 N. Woodland Blvd. At approximately 10:10 p.m. one of the men entered the store, approached the register and pulled out a gun. He ordered the clerk away from the counter and had him walk toward a cooler. The clerk refused to go into the cooler, though, and the robber struck the clerk on the head with the gun, causing him to collapse on the floor. The gunman then took the victim’s wallet. The clerk said that at this time he heard another person enter the store and believes this accomplice took money from the register and lottery tickets. Once the robbers left, the clerk quickly called 911.

The gunman was described as a tall white man with a large build in his late 20s and wearing a white tank top. The clerk didn’t see enough of the second person to be able to give a description. Their vehicle was a beige Jeep Cherokee.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to contact Sheriff’s investigator Casey Gallagher at (386) 943-7866 or Crime Stoppers of Northeast Florida toll-free at 1-888-277-TIPS. Callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous and can qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.
